“Improvisations, Reconstructions, and Relative Actions: a Decade” is an exhibition of sculptures, paintings, and an installation by the artist James Jared Taylor. The work covers a ten year period culminating with a series of sculptures that were started during the Covid shutdown in March 2020. Included in the exhibition are paintings and sculptures created in summer of 2022 at the ACI Artists Residency in Corciano, Italy. The artist will also install 100 small study paintings from an ongoing series titled “Improvisatory Notations” that were started in 2012. The artwork covers a range of media: wood, acrylic painting, and fabricated steel.
The artworks on exhibition are personal investigations into formalist abstraction and constructivism that depart from other work Taylor has created and exhibited. He derives some of his ideas for the work in this exhibition from observations of architecture, modernist movements such as Neo Concretism, Russian Constructivism, the De Stijl- particularly Lygia Pape and El Lissitzky, and the axial perspective and spatial constructions of Giotto. Taylor’s process is about improvisation (jazz being a strong influence) and the constant impulse to create in two and three dimensional space.
